Healthy Ramen Makeover 101
Ramen has been a staple in college dorm rooms and kitchen cupboards for longer than many of us can remember. So what is it that we love about Ramen? It’s inexpensive, quick and easy to make, and it tastes good. But have you become bored with the same old Ramen over the years? If so, it’s time for a Ramen makeover! There are numerous ways you can upgrade your Ramen without adding a lot of cost and time, yet keep it healthy.
When making over your Ramen, do not use the flavoring packet that comes with it, as it’s very high in sodium. Instead, add natural flavors – this will not only make your Ramen taste great but will also make it much healthier. Plus, added colors from natural flavors will also make your Ramen dishes more appealing.
Here are some more tips for making your Ramen healthier:
- Cook Ramen in broth instead of water for added taste. This is very simple to do as it doesn’t take any extra steps. Remember to use the low sodium variety.
- Add fresh vegetables to the Ramen when it is cooking. Fresh spinach, bok choy, cabbage, water cress, bean sprouts, scallions, carrots, snap peas, and broccoli can be added directly to the boiling liquid with the Ramen. Since some vegetables take longer to cook, add these to the boiling liquid before adding the Ramen, and let them cook a little before adding the Ramen and the rest of the ingredients.
- Frozen vegetables also work great with Ramen, but run them under hot water and drain them before adding them to the boiling liquid.
- Add some cooked lean meat, poultry, or tofu to the Ramen after it’s done cooking to get some protein and make it a full meal. Cooked shrimp and fish also make a great addition.
Be creative and use your imagination when making Ramen dishes!
